Emotional Stories

At 48, Abeer had a successful business and a comfortable life in the city. What she missed was companionship. An invitation to a family wedding brought her back to the village she had left years earlier—and to a relationship she had never expected.

The life she built away from home

Abeer grew up in a family that worked on other people’s farms. Hoping to give his children a better future, her father moved them to the city and became a building caretaker.

After her parents died, Abeer supported herself by cleaning homes. A woman who worked at weddings noticed her presence and ability and encouraged her to learn to dance. Abeer took the opportunity, became known for her performances, and began earning more than she had imagined possible.

She married a wealthy man who helped her open a dance school. They had a son, Karim. When her husband died in an accident, he left her substantial property.

For years, her work and her son occupied her attention. She had little interest in another marriage.

A letter brings the past back

One day, Karim told her that a visitor from the village had left a letter. Her uncle, Hassan, was inviting her to his daughter Zeinab’s wedding.

The invitation brought back memories of her parents and childhood. Abeer decided to take Karim with her so that he could meet his relatives and learn how to reach the village himself.

At the village bridge, they met Hassan’s son, Jaafar. He was 29, worked in farming, and drove a tuk-tuk. He offered to take them to his father’s house.

The meeting surprised Abeer. The younger cousin she remembered was now an adult, and an attraction developed between them.

A celebration changes their plans

The family welcomed Abeer and Karim warmly. Zeinab encouraged Abeer to wear a traditional robe for the henna celebration, and Abeer rediscovered the songs, jokes, and closeness she had missed.

At the wedding itself, Zeinab asked her to dance. Abeer hesitated, knowing that performing in front of the village would attract attention, but eventually agreed as a gift to the bride.

Afterward, tired and overheated, she went to the rooftop for a quiet moment. Jaafar followed to check on her. Their conversation quickly became more personal.

She learned that he was unmarried and offered him a job in the city. A private encounter brought them closer, and Abeer began imagining him as a companion rather than simply a relative she was helping.

The following day, she asked whether he truly wanted to leave with her. He said he did.

Hassan feared that his son would disappear from the family’s life as Abeer had. She promised to look after Jaafar and give him an opportunity to build a future. Hassan finally agreed.

The secret that cannot stay hidden

Back in the city, Abeer and Jaafar’s relationship grew beyond work. She proposed marriage. He worried that his father would reject it because of their age difference.

They decided to marry without telling Hassan.

Then Abeer discovered that she was pregnant. The secret was no longer something they could keep indefinitely.

She had returned to the village wanting to reconnect with her family. Now she had to decide how to tell her uncle that she had married his son and that Jaafar was going to become a father.

The account leaves that confrontation unresolved. Abeer knows that Hassan trusted her with his son’s future. Waiting may delay the conversation, but it may also make his eventual discovery more painful.
