When Samah asked me to repair her laptop, she trusted me with more than a device. I broke that trust, and the consequences followed both of us.

My name is Mohannad. I am 35 and run a small computer and phone repair shop beneath the building where I live.

A neighbor’s trust

Samah lived across the hallway. She was a quiet elementary school teacher whose husband had been working abroad for years. She gave private lessons to help cover household expenses.

My wife arranged for our son to study with her. When a disagreement led my wife to leave home for a while, I took over taking him to lessons and coordinating appointments and payments.

Samah was always courteous and reserved. Eventually, she told me her laptop would not turn on. She needed it to speak with her husband.

Before handing it over, she asked me not to open anything personal. She said she had chosen me because she trusted me. I promised to respect her privacy.

The first mistake

Once I got the laptop working, curiosity overcame that promise. I opened private files, recordings of conversations with her husband, and her browsing history.

Initially, what I saw challenged the image I had formed of her. Then I recognized that her private relationship with her husband was none of my business.

I should have closed the files immediately. Instead, I copied them.

When I returned the laptop that evening, I was embarrassed by how I looked at her. She noticed, and I apologized, but I did not admit what I had done.

Early the next morning, she called because the laptop had stopped working again. During the repair, she anxiously asked whether I had seen anything private.

I eventually admitted that I had.

She explained that her husband had been away for four years. She had saved recordings of their conversations because she feared that he might one day deny things he had said or expose her private life.

I apologized for violating her trust. But the conversation took us into a different boundary violation: an affair neither of us should have begun.

Regret becomes pressure

Afterward, we both said we regretted what had happened and would not repeat it. I tried to keep future contact limited to practical help and repairs.

Months passed. Then Samah sent a message asking me to return. I refused and said that the relationship had been a mistake.

She told me she had recorded me and could expose what had happened. Now each of us feared the private material the other possessed.

I did not go back. That did not make me blameless; I understood that continuing would deepen a situation I had helped create.

The responsibility I could not avoid

I entered Samah’s home as a repair technician and neighbor. I had no right to browse her files, copy them, or use her loneliness as a reason to cross another boundary.

Her husband’s absence was part of her distress, but it did not erase either of our choices.

The story ends with unresolved questions about trust, neglect, and threats. For me, its beginning remains clear: the first door opened when I ignored a promise to protect someone’s privacy.
