Interesting Stories

Um Khaled was 38 when she told this account. Her husband, Abu Khaled, was 46. The driver she came to depend on, Asem, was 26.

Her story begins before the night on the bus—with the marriage she chose despite her parents’ warnings.

A household she supported alone

She had been attracted to Abu Khaled’s confidence and style. Her parents were concerned about his character, but, unwilling to deny their only daughter, they eventually accepted the marriage.

After their son was born, expenses increased. Um Khaled found work in a sewing workshop far from home. Public buses were the practical link between the two places.

Over repeated trips, she grew familiar with Asem. He listened, spoke kindly, and gradually learned about her household difficulties. They also began talking by phone.

Her husband stopped contributing enough through work. She felt responsible for supporting the home while he spent time at the café and asked her for money.

Although she wanted help, she resisted returning to her parents and admitting that their warnings had been right.

Forced out after midnight

An argument began around 2 a.m. when she urged her husband to work and help her. When she mentioned her father’s concerns about him, he hit her.

Their son saw what was happening but did not intervene. She tried to gather clothes, but her husband prevented her from taking them and forced her outside with only what she was wearing.

She managed to keep her phone. With the streets quiet and her parents’ home about two hours away, she called Asem for a ride.

He arrived in roughly ten minutes with the bus.

Comfort at a vulnerable moment

During the journey, she explained what had happened. They stopped for coffee, then continued before Asem pulled over again in a deserted area.

She was crying and struggling to calm herself. He approached as though to reassure her, but the comfort became an intimate encounter.

Afterward, she asked why he had done that when she had called him because she believed she would be safe. She also acknowledged that the attention had brought her a feeling of relief she had long wanted from her husband.

They continued to her parents’ home. Her reaction shifted from tears to overwhelmed laughter as she tried to absorb everything that had happened in one night.

A year away from her marriage

She remained with her parents, and her relationship with Asem continued. He gave her attention and financial support, and she became increasingly attached to him.

After a year, her husband sought reconciliation. He said he was working again and that circumstances had improved.

By then, Um Khaled says, her feelings toward him had changed. She had come to associate comfort with Asem, even while recognizing that the continuing affair did not resolve her marriage.

The account does not end with a final decision about returning home. It leaves her facing the consequences of violence, neglect, an exploited moment of distress, and a relationship that has become difficult to leave.
