After a painful phone conversation, she turned to laundry as a distraction. The washing machine would not start.
The service appointment
A neighbor suggested contacting the company. The company arranged a visit from Peter, a 41-year-old technician, and told her to check his service identification before letting him in.
He arrived about two hours later with his tools and work clothes. Shereen showed him the machine and went to prepare a drink.
When she returned, she discovered him behaving inappropriately with personal items left near the laundry. She confronted him and threatened to report him to his company.
Peter apologized repeatedly and offered to leave. Shereen stopped him and told him to complete the repair.
A boundary crossed in both directions
As he worked, she continued referring to what she had seen and to the possibility of reporting him. He said he had been divorced for six months and feared losing the job on which he depended.
The machine was eventually repaired. Rather than ending the appointment, Shereen extended the conversation and made a personal demand of her own.
She used the threat of a complaint to pressure him into staying. What began with his misconduct became another coercive situation and then an affair.
The account’s wordplay about repairing another “washing machine” does not change what occurred: both people moved beyond the legitimate purpose of a service visit, and pressure played a part.
An arrangement that continued
Before Peter left, Shereen paid him 1,000 Egyptian pounds and asked for his personal number. She continued calling him while Khaled was away, using repairs as the reason for the visits.
She says the arrangement was still continuing when she told the story. At times, when she mentioned a problem to Khaled, he simply told her to call the technician.
Mona’s closing commentary focuses on the emotional distance created by Khaled’s long absences. But the written account provides no confrontation, resolution, or evidence that the marriage’s underlying problems have been addressed.
The story leaves a household outwardly functioning while its most important conversations remain avoided.
