Um Nawaf wears a turquoise headscarf beside a man in a red-and-white headscarf on the cover of Nasser’s story.

Nasser left Egypt for Saudi Arabia at twenty-six. He was married and had a young daughter, and the purpose of the trip was simple: earn enough to give his family a more secure future.

He chose a job in Jeddah over another offer in Mecca. At first, he worked for a delivery business owned by an older man named Muslim, known as Abu Nawaf. Nasser completed his routes carefully and returned accurate accounts. After several months, his employer offered him a position as the family’s private driver.

Nasser saw the new role as recognition of his honesty. It also brought him closer to the employer’s home and placed greater responsibility in his hands.

The Friday assignment

His first assignment was to take Um Nawaf to a farm in the mountains, a journey she made each week. He cleaned the car, filled the tank, and arrived determined to make a good impression.

Meeting her unsettled him. She seemed younger than he had expected, and he struggled to hide his surprise. During the ninety-minute drive, she asked him to turn off the music and tell her about himself.

He explained that he loved his wife and missed his family. Um Nawaf asked increasingly personal questions. Then she spoke about her own marriage: Abu Nawaf was generous and provided material comfort, but she felt that important parts of her life were missing.

A request he knew was wrong

At the farm, Um Nawaf asked Nasser to make tea while she went upstairs. When she returned, her manner made him realize the assignment was becoming something other than transportation.

She told him that anything he saw or heard there must remain private. She also offered money, while warning him against speaking about what happened.

Nasser objected that Abu Nawaf had trusted him. He had come as a driver, not to become involved in the employer’s marriage. Um Nawaf answered by explaining her loneliness and the things her husband’s wealth could not provide.

Nasser is left torn between that pressure, the temptation of money, and the family he traveled to support. Watch the accompanying narration to hear how the visit unfolds.
