He described himself as a businessman with companies and online work. Lulu wanted stability and believed he could provide it. After about a year, he proposed and impressed her parents with the same confident account of his career.
The trip she had imagined
Soon after the wedding, Badr announced that they would honeymoon in America and attend World Cup matches there. His friend Amjad, an American citizen, would help with the travel arrangements.
For Lulu, the trip sounded like the beginning of a life larger than the one she had known.
Amjad met them at the airport and initially acted as a friendly host. He showed them around and spent time with them. Lulu then noticed looks and remarks that made her uncomfortable. When she expected Badr to object to an inappropriate comment about her, he laughed instead.
She tried to explain away her unease, wondering whether she was misunderstanding the situation. The discomfort grew as the football matches began.
More than ordinary disappointment
Badr became irritable and withdrawn. Each match seemed to matter to him far beyond the result on the field. Lulu asked whether they had come to enjoy their honeymoon or argue, but he avoided explaining what was wrong.
She eventually understood that he was betting money and hiding the losses. Each attempt to recover what he had lost drew him deeper into the problem and further away from the life he had promised her.
Lulu’s dream honeymoon has become a situation she no longer understands or feels comfortable in. The written story pauses as Badr’s losses deepen; watch the accompanying narration for the next events.
