Their marriage had once included affection. Over the years, it had become a routine of cigarettes, sleep, shouting, and indifference. The work exhausted her, but the absence of kindness hurt more. She felt useful to everyone and important to no one.
The man who noticed her unhappiness
Samuel, a milk merchant, had visited the house for more than twenty years. His early morning collections meant that he often saw Um Shenouda while the rest of the family was asleep.
Their conversations began with ordinary business. Gradually, he asked about her health, her workload, and why she looked so tired. Those small questions reached a part of her life her husband had ignored for years.
One morning, after a night in which her husband had beaten her, she broke down while feeding the animals. Samuel found her crying. She tried to hide what had happened, then began talking. He listened and told her she still deserved appreciation.
A late-night WhatsApp message followed. It was a small exchange, but to Um Shenouda it meant someone had remembered her after leaving the house. Soon she was waiting for his morning visits without admitting to herself what those visits had become.
Comfort that created another burden
Um Shenouda struggled with guilt. She still thought of herself as loyal to her marriage, even while Samuel’s attention filled an emotional space she had stopped expecting her husband to notice.
The relationship crossed the boundaries of her marriage. At first, she felt that part of her old self had returned. That feeling gave way to fear: fear of losing her family, fear of discovery, and the weight of a decision she could not undo by explaining how lonely she had been.
The story does not present her husband’s cruelty as harmless. It also does not present the secret relationship as a lasting solution to that cruelty. One painful situation had led her into another.
Her son’s return
Her son Shenouda came home unexpectedly and decided to stop traveling. His presence changed the household routine. Samuel no longer approached her as freely, and the distance gave Um Shenouda time to think.
She began asking herself how she had reached this point. Eventually, she decided to end the relationship and face the difficulties in her life without keeping that door open.
The ending offers a decision rather than proof that her marriage was repaired. Um Shenouda chooses to stop the affair; the neglect and violence that preceded it remain serious problems in the life she must now confront.
