Mahmoud challenged his uncle’s behavior and pointed out that Sally needed companionship, not only household expenses. Essam briefly listened, then asked Mahmoud to reassure her while he traveled.
A promise to help
Sally told Mahmoud that even when Essam returned, he spent his time with friends or came home only to eat and sleep. She felt alone inside a marriage that existed mostly through departures and arrivals.
Mahmoud offered to help with anything she needed. She answered that he could not provide what she was missing. He took the remark as an expression of sadness and continued visiting to bring household supplies and check on her after Essam left.
One night, Sally called late and said she needed him immediately. She would not explain, so he assumed she was ill or facing an emergency and took a taxi to her home.
The meaning of the call
When Mahmoud arrived, he realized that there was no ordinary emergency. Sally reminded him of his promise to do what she needed and sought an intimate relationship.
He objected, reminding her that she was his uncle’s wife. He said that following this path would harm the family.
Sally then threatened him. She said the cameras had recorded his late-night arrival and that she could tell Essam he had come with improper intentions. The recording of a visit could be turned into a story he feared he could not disprove.
Under that pressure, Mahmoud became involved in a sexual encounter the account describes through fear and coercion. His earlier promise to help with practical needs did not give Sally the right to demand intimacy or threaten him.
What remained afterward
Mahmoud left unable to sleep and afraid of facing his family. Sally later called with a calmness that disturbed him. When he asked how she could create this barrier between him and his uncle, she blamed Essam’s years of neglect.
The story leaves Essam unaware of what Mahmoud describes. There is no confession, investigation, or family resolution when this part of the story ends.
It closes with Mahmoud carrying the secret and questioning how an attempt to help became part of the household’s harm. Essam’s violence and neglect, Sally’s coercion, and Mahmoud’s distress are distinct parts of the account; one does not erase another.
